In the fast-evolving landscape of early childhood education, leaders who create opportunities, drive impactful change, inspire others and elevate educational standards are invaluable. ITAV’s Director of Teaching Learning & Quality Practice (ECE), Darrell Brown, is one of these leaders. This week, Darrell took the stage at the CDA Council for Professional Recognition to present on the topic, “Combating the Teacher Shortage Crisis Using A Grow Your Own Model: A Lesson from Chicago.” His presentation highlights the groundbreaking work ITAV is doing in teacher training and development, while also underscoring Darrell’s personal dedication to supporting Black and Brown youth in the field of education.
A Visionary Leader with a Groundbreaking Journey
When ITAV’s CEO interviewed Darrell four years ago, she instantly recognized his unique potential. Reflecting on that moment, she shared, “Darrell’s authenticity was undeniable—he didn’t code-switch, he was unapologetically himself. I knew then he had the guts and grit to lead impactful change.” Just after that interview, ITAV secured seed funding from the Illinois Department of Human Services, marking the beginning of Darrell’s journey with ITAV.
Darrell and his team tackled their first cohorts with relentless determination, overcoming challenges that arose in establishing academic skills, professionalism, and commitment in their students. ITAV’s CEO remarked on their success: “It’s hard to fully express the pride I feel in Darrell and his team. His leadership has transformed our approach and inspired all of us at ITAV. He is the kind of leader we all aspire to be—a true difference-maker.”
Inspiring Results and Measurable Impact
Under Darrell’s direction, ITAV has become a model of success, setting benchmarks in teacher training and workforce placement that now serve as national standards. Today, ITAV proudly boasts the following achievements:
- 107 Child Development Associate (CDA) credentials awarded
- 137 youth placed in full-time, living-wage employment
- 60 students enrolled in community college programs
- 29 Black and Brown educators supported in obtaining Professional Educator Licenses (PEL)
Darrell’s influence has touched hundreds of lives and fostered a new generation of educators from underrepresented backgrounds. Beyond these achievements, 791 young people have been exposed to the education field through paid summer jobs and apprenticeships. “I’ve seen firsthand how culturally responsive education impacts students,” Darrell shared. “I remember having my first Black teacher and feeling seen, affirmed, and inspired. That’s why I do this work.”
A Beautiful Experience: Darrell’s Reflections on the CDA Council Presentation
Reflecting on his recent presentation at the CDA Council conference, Darrell described the experience as “beautiful.” He shared, “Everything literally fell into place. To be part of a conversation addressing the teacher shortage on a national level is something I’ll never forget. It was encouraging to see so many others committed to tackling these issues and creating solutions.”
The CDA Council conference provided Darrell with a valuable opportunity to share ITAV’s successes while also learning from others engaged in similar efforts nationwide. “Attending the conference was not just a milestone but also a chance to re-energize and continue growing ITAV’s impact,” he reflected.
Darrell’s Advice to Parents: Choosing the Right Childcare Center
Beyond his leadership role, Darrell offers important guidance to parents about choosing the best early childhood centers for their children. He suggests looking for programs that prioritize preparing children for school, ensuring that every child has a strong foundation. Darrell encourages parents to seek out culturally responsive centers, where diversity and inclusivity are embraced in both curriculum and staff.
“A culturally responsive school provides a space where children feel seen and respected,” he advised. “It’s essential for their growth and confidence.” He also encourages parents to be transparent with educators and build relationships with them, explaining that a solid partnership between parents and teachers is key: “When parents and teachers work together, it can truly change the trajectory of that child’s life.”
Commitment to Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging
Darrell’s approach to leadership is rooted in the JEDIB principles: Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging. His own experience as a student was shaped by the absence of educators who looked like him, which inspired his commitment to fostering diversity within ITAV’s programs. “Embracing diversity in our educators allows our students to feel a sense of belonging,” Darrell shared. “It promotes empathy and understanding among young learners, which has a lifelong impact.”
Philanthropic Partnerships and Bold Goals
ITAV’s achievements are made possible in part due to support from partners such as the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus, Illinois State Board of Education, and Illinois Department of Human Services. These partnerships help provide the resources that enable ITAV to offer diverse and meaningful pathways into the education sector for Black and Brown youth. ITAV’s CEO credited these partnerships, noting, “We’re beyond grateful to our partners who make our work possible. Together, we’re opening doors and empowering future leaders in education.”
Looking Forward: A Model for National Change
As ITAV continues to pave the way for innovation in early childhood education, Darrell’s leadership remains at the heart of the organization’s vision. His presentation at the CDA Council conference solidifies ITAV’s position as a national leader, while also underscoring Darrell’s dedication to shaping the future of education. His words and actions are a powerful reminder that with courage, authenticity, and community support, we can drive lasting change.
