ITAV has been selected as the sole nonprofit in Illinois to receive funding through Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation’s highly competitive ‘Game-On Community Places to Play’ initiative. This prestigious grant, in partnership with LISC (Local Initiatives Support Corporation), provides crucial resources to enhance ITAV’s sports and recreational facilities, fostering opportunities for youth and families in underserved communities to engage in safe, empowering activities.
The initiative, which awarded $1.7 million to 20 community organizations nationwide, highlights ITAV’s efforts to combat violence and promote resilience in Chicago. As the city continues to grapple with alarming violence statistics—where, in 2023 alone, youth under 18 accounted for 15% of gun violence victims—programs like this are vital for offering proactive solutions. By creating safe, accessible spaces, ITAV directly addresses these challenges, steering young people away from harm and toward positive development.
A Safe Haven in Chicago’s Bronzeville
The funding will support the creation of cutting-edge gymnasiums and recreational areas at ITAV’s new Bronzeville campus, and serve as a sanctuary for Chicago’s youth.
Students at ITAV-LA have already made their own personal connections about the importance of having safe spaces to play and “be a kid.” During recent presentations for their Grassroots Campaigns, several students across grade levels noted that their parents don’t allow them to play outside in their neighborhoods for fear of gun violence.
“We want safe play spaces because they help us build community and be kind. We get to practice our motor skills and be healthy and exercise and grow strong muscles. They also help us with growing our imagination.” – Jayce, Ms. Nolen’s Kindergarten Class
Breaking Cycles Through Prevention and Collaboration
ITAV’s mission aligns with citywide efforts to reduce violence, recognizing that equitable access to recreational spaces plays a pivotal role in prevention. Research underscores that young people with access to structured sports programs are 50% less likely to engage in antisocial behavior. ITAV’s commitment to creating these spaces reaffirms its role as a catalyst for positive change in Chicago.
“This recognition is a testament to collaboration and the belief in the potential of every child,” said Anita Andrews-Hutchinson, Chief Growth Officer of ITAV. “We’re honored to work with Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation and LISC to foster environments where children feel valued, and inspired.”
Celebrating 20 Years of Impact
As ITAV marks its 20th anniversary, this grant solidifies its legacy of transforming Chicago communities. The enhanced facilities not only promote physical health but also instill pride and unity in Bronzeville and beyond, offering a tangible step toward reducing violence and fostering well-being.
“This partnership is about more than building sports facilities—it’s about addressing the root causes of violence by creating safe spaces where our youth can channel their energy into teamwork, leadership, and growth. At ITAV, we believe that investing in recreational opportunities is an investment in community transformation, and this collaboration with Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation and LISC helps us foster a future where our children thrive, our families feel secure, and our neighborhoods are united in hope,” said Nakisha Hobbs, co-founder and CEO of ITAV.
